Our Animals

Goats

We have five goats at Cerrig y Barcud, all of whom enjoy being stroked, and most of all, being fed! The goats are kept as pets, and not milked.

Sarah and Polly (or to give them their proper pedigree names, Pollyanna Sarah, and Pollyanna Lois) are pygmy goats and joined Cerrig y Barcud in 2004 when Polly was only 3 months old. Her mother, Sarah who was 4 years old at the time is the shorter haired of the two pygmy goats, and was born in 2000. Sarah is very much the “boss” of our little herd. They are extremely friendly and until recently used to follow us on walks around the grounds. These walks only stopped when they took a liking to the new trees planted in the front lawns!

White Goats

Crystal and Snowdrop joined us here in summer 2008, having been born earlier in the year at Foel Farm Park. Should you choose to visit the farm park during your stay with us, you will see their father “Billy” who is the largest in the goat pen at the park, displaying an extremely fine set of horns! Crystal is the larger of the white goats and is Mum to Frosty who was born here on 30th December 2008.

Ponies

The two Welsh Mountain Ponies have been with us since 2008, and share our field with sheep belonging to a local farmer. The Welsh Mountain Pony is thought to have evolved from the prehistoric Celtic pony, and which adapted to the difficult climate of severe winters and sparse vegetation on the hills and mountains of Wales to produce a tough and hardy pony.

Bandit is the Palamino pony, who is ridden by our children, Michael and Lucie. Born in 1995, Bandit has always lived on Anglesey, and came to us after his previous owner grew too big to ride him.

Harry Jackson is the dapple grey, born in Mid-Wales in 2003, and sent to auction at only a few months old, unwanted because of his “boxed feet”. This is a genetic condition affecting the coffin bone of the hoof, with an affected animal appearing to be standing to some degree on its toe. He was rescued by Equine Market Watch and taken to their sanctuary in mid-south Wales, from where he was later brought to Cerrig y Barcud as a companion for Bandit.

Olive is a black Shetland Pony, who also came to us in 2008. Like Harry, she came from the Equine Market Watch sanctuary, having been abandoned in a field together with another Shetland Pony who has been re-homed elsewhere. Olive is believed to have been 3 years old when she joined us at Cerrig y Barcud

Cats

Martha and Rose are our two feral cats, named after Dr Who’s companions! They were rescued by a local animal sanctuary, and joined us as kittens in late 2007. They are working cats, and live in one of the outbuildings, mixing freely with the goats and other animals, whilst as feral cats, they will generally keep away from humans. Martha is almost entirely black, whilst Rose is black with white patches
